While the wedding is a grand and joyous affair, not everyone is happy cast-aside Werewolf/ex-love interest Jacob (Taylor Lautner) attempts to deal with not just Bella's choice to marry Cullen, but her decision to become a vampire as well. The basic plot follows the marriage of bloodsucker Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his bride-to-be Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) as they prepare for their nuptials. Unlike the prior Twilight films, which offered self-contained and mostly engaging story lines (albeit still guilty pleasure melodrama), the first half of Breaking Dawn is a mishmash of moments that fail to build tension or further develop any of the fan-favorite characters.

Even die-hard fans of the books will likely find that at least two of the more pivotal moments from the printed page do not translate well to the big screen - and, as result, once again reveal glaringly poor production values and uninspired direction in a film series that, cumulatively, has earned Summit Films over $1 billion worldwide. Unfortunately, judging by the events unfolding in Breaking Dawn: Part 1, the answer is no.Īt least half of the film is dominated by one melodramatic scene after another - in place of either interesting character interactions or exciting action - essentially laying ground for the (presumably) more stimulating Part 2. While audiences were initially skeptical of the idea when it was introduced with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, the success of the final two Potter films (both commercially and critically) seemingly justified the extra trip to the theater. Two-part finales have become a go-to approach for studios to milk extra money out of fan-favorite young adult franchises - and arguably a way to give lengthier final book installments a bit more room to wrap everything up. For his part Jacob (Taylor Lautner), always pushy and overbearing around Bella, lurks around practically biting his tongue to avoid crowing "I told you this was a terrible idea!" There's also some mishegoss with his werewolf brethren and a possible war with the Cullens, but it amounts to so little it's barely worth considering.The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 succeeds in transferring the key events from its source material onto the screen, but fails at translating those events into a competent two-hour film. Strangely, Bella winds up isolated from almost everyone amid this- Edward at first avoids having sex with her for fear of hurting her, then during her pregnancy remains strangely distant, even when she appears to need him most. No Volturi over in Italy, no evil vampires, just the same central characters we've come to know, dealing first with Edward and Bella's wedding and then her pregnancy with the half-vampire, half-human baby that grows so quickly it threatens her life. The nice thing about this first half of Breaking Dawn- the second installment of the saga is coming next year- is that the story is relatively compact. It's just too bad there weren't more of them for him to salvage.
The wheels were bound to fall off- there's only so much you can do with Stephenie Meyer's ploddingly written and baffling source material- but director Bill Condon picks the moments that work and runs with them. It's not just pandering to its built-in audience either- for all its insane plot points and utterly illogical characters, Breaking Dawn occasionally carries a surprising emotional tug, particularly in the first half that focuses on the wedding and honeymoon. As the culmination of a global franchise driven by a primarily female fanbase, Breaking Dawn is to emotions and relationships what movies like Iron Man 2 are to explosions and CGI, indulging in big moments that are nothing but two characters staring into one another's eyes as if it were an epic gun battle. Breaking Dawn is one of few modern blockbusters that treats distinctly female interests and concerns- wedding dresses, honeymoons, childbirth- as cinematic spectacle.
